Based on the data of gas acquired from the infrared analyzer and model calculation as well as on the material balance and thermal equilibrium in the bath of converter the present paper demonstrates the feasibility of prediction on the carbon content and temperature in continuous control of the converter by way of gas analysis and then reaches the conclusion that a higher hit rate can be achieved by gas analysis when the end point carbon content is less than 0.06% and is more suitable for refining low carbon steel. However since all data for predicting the temperature are acquired indirectly the hit rate of temperature prediction is inevitably lower by the gas analysis.

RH has already become the key process in refining the high quality steels because of its powerful function. With the increase of hot metal quantity in the upstream processes and with an increased demand of high quality steels in the downstream processes the RH in the No.1 Steel-making Plant has already become the bottleneck affecting increase of the high quality steel productivity. Upon analysis of the factors affecting the RH productivity in No.1 Steel-making Plant the management optimization is carried out in the Plant including the principle of RH production schedule, RH steel allocation to the continuous casting machine, RH task division, reduction of RH treatment cycle, ingot steel production schedule and match of ingot steel and continuous casting steel. As the results the daily average productivity of RH treatment has increased 2.9 heats and the ratio of non-RH treated steels decreased accordingly.

Effect of M-EMS intensity on carbon segregation and micro-solidification structure has been studied on medium carbon bloom with a section of 180mm×180mm. Results show that with an increase of M-EMS current intensity in the mould the equiaxial crystal is increased and the secondary dendritic arm spacing and the central carbon segregation are decreased, yet the inter mediate carbon segregation in the bloom is increased. Therefore higher M-EMS current intensity is inappropriate for medium carbon bloom. It’s proved that intermediate carbon segregation in the medium carbon bloom is closely related to the occurrence of white band.

The longitudinal crack on the surface of the rolling stock of 15CrMo steel arises mostly from the transverse crack existing in the continuous casting bloom. The transverse crack in the continuous casting bloom often occurs along the intergranular boundary of the super large prior austenite grains (diameter of the grain >1 mm) as soon as the mould temperature arrives at 1 300℃. The intergranular crack of the continuous casting bloom has been analyzed by macro examination, metallographical observation and SEM analysis and the method for determination of the surface intergranular crack of the CC bloom is provided as well.

The pretreatment containers determined by comparison of the thermodynamic conditions for different flux and different pretreatment methods are as follows: ladle for desulphurization by KR and converter for desiliconization and dephosphorization exclusively. It’s concluded by comparison analysis of the operation cost for hot metal pretreatment that special converter be selected to carry out dssiliconization and dephosphorization simultaneously and for the purpose of desulphurization KR method (CaO used as the desulphurizer) be adopted. The optimal hot metal pretreatment mode for the newly built steel-making plant is determined to be hot metal desulphurization in ladle by KR method (CaO as desulphurizer) and desiliconization and dephosphorization in converter.

The effects of entry angle and submergence depth of the nozzle as well as the casting speed on fluctuation of the liquid steel level of the mould have been researched by water model simulation of cast mould in the No.2 steel-making Plant of TISCO. In the experiments the appropriate casting speed values are determined to be 0.8 m/min, 0.85 m/min and 0.9 m/min separately, and the entry angle determined is 10, 12 and 15 degree respectively and the submergence depth is controlled within the limit of 60~160mm (20mm space) in light of the practical production conditions. It’s verified out of the experiments that the effect of the entry angle of the nozzle and the drawing speed on the liquid level fluctuation is of insignificance, whereas the effect of the submergence depth of the nozzle on the liquid level fluctuation is very prominent. Experimental results show that the down- grade ratio of the cold rolled stainless steel sheet 0Cr18Ni9 has been lowered to 4.80 % from 6.38 % since the readjustment of the submergence depth of the nozzle to 130mm from original 110mm.

The influence of the slag basicity, MgO, CaF2 and Al2O3 content in AOD final slag on erosion of MgO-CaO lining is investigated. The erosion of the same slag onto the MgO-CaO crucible with different CaO content is compared. The reaction layer of slag-refractory is analyzed by means of the Scanning Electron Microscope. The results show that the slag basicity is the most important factor to MgO-CaO lining erosion. The erosion is remarkably reduced with the increase of basicity, and with the increase of MgO content or the decrease of CaF2 content in slag. It is also observed that the erosion resistance to CaO-SiO2-MgO slag is enhanced with the increase of CaO content in MgO-CaO refractory.

Influences of lime calcination temperature as well as compositions and temperature of slag on active lime liquation in initial slag of converter steelmaking are investigated by means of the rotating cylinder method. The results show that liquation rate of active lime calcined at 1000℃ reaches the highest. Increase of FeO, less MgO content and lower slag basicity, and higher temperature are in favor of active lime liquation in slag. Process of active lime liquation in initial slag of converter contains the surface dissolution and the lime metamorphism disaggregation due to penetration of slag, in which case the latter is crucial.

On the basis of analysis on the factors affecting the LF productivity, a series of technological measures have been adopted including optimization of the refining process, production flow and production management and etc. As the results the ratio of non-LF process steel has been decreased and the LF productivity raised up.

This paper investigates the oxygen content and non-metal inclusions of the GCr15 bearing steel in each and every phase of the LF refining process. The results indicate that in the existing process conditions the oxygen content of steel has been reduced to a lower level through 15 to 20 minutes of LF refining. The appropriate time for soft blowing upon completion of LF refining is proved to be about 15 minutes. The dimension of the non-metal inclusions at the end of LF process is below 15μm; To reduce the secondary contamination of steel the casting process should be strengthened.

After argon-blowing station reformation of NO.2 Steel-making Plant of WISCO, the molten steel argon-blowing refinement can satisfy the actual production more. After over one year developping ,the argon-blowing station has following various functions: CAS argon -blowing in ladle of molten steel 、 tiny adjustment composition Si, Mn, Ti, Nb, tiny adjustment temperature degree, tiny adjustment composition Als through feeding Aluminum line、tiny adjustment composition C through feeding Carbon line、adjustment temperature degree and sampling of RH molten steel 、 improve argon-blowing success rate through trying blowing Argon before tapping steel,, lower the production cost and cut process time greatly.

An experimental study was carried out on simulation of hot metal injection desiliconization in ladles by way of multi-batches top addition of desiliconization reagents plus partial immersion blowing of gaseous oxygen in SiC tube furnace at 1350℃. Three kinds of desiliconization reagents can all meet the requirements of injection desiliconization in ladles with desiliconization capacity of LD dust > mill scale > iron concentrates. Partial immersion blowing of gaseous oxygen can obviously increase the desiliconization velocity and greatly shorten treatment time. The optimum compositions and usage of the injection desiliconization reagents are recommended and the coverter dust without addition of CaO is proved to be the best desiliconizer.Using it as the desiliconizer not only the wear of the grinding machinery can be reduced, but the power consumption in operation also greatly lowered.

The experimental study is carried out on hot metal pretreatment (dephosphorizatin) and steel-making using w(P)=0.28%~2.02% hot metal as starting material in a 500kg induction furnace in simulation of a top-bottom combined blown converter. Results show that the dephosphorization rate of the hot metal arrives at 67% to 86% in the initial dephosphorization pretreatment stage and upon completion of decarburization in steel-making the dephosphorization rate cliimbs to as high as 86% to 97%. The primary factors affecting the dephosphorization rate of the hot metal are basicity of the converter slag, oxygen supply rate and temperature of bath.
