    Stability processing technology and application prospect of steel slag

    Steel slag has an excellent physical and mechanical properties and some hard-water activity, fully meet the specification of engineering materials, but the size of its potential instability has seriously hampered the application of steel slag works. This paper summarizes the utilization of domestic and foreign steel slag research, analyzed the factors that caused the reasons for expansion of steel slag, to improve the stability of the process approach, and look forward to prospect the engineering application of steel slag.

    Water Model and Numerical Simulation on Argon Blowing from Bottom of Ladle

    A water model for 130t ladle has been established and the mixing time of the molten steel in the ladle measured by conductivity method. The effects of different arrangement of permeable elements and different gas blowing rate on the mixing time of the molten steel in the process of ladle bottom argon blowing have been discussed. In the meanwhile the flow field inside the ladle is numerically simulated and the changes of the flow field in the ladle in different conditions are investigated and the optimal bottom argon blowing positions and argon bubbling patterns determined.

    In the present paper effects of the nozzle position variation, the flow rate of the bottom blow and the submerging depth of the submerged tube on the mixing status of the hot metal in the 210t ladle in the process of C.A.S refining have been studied and the law of influence of those parameters on the mixture of the hot metal found out by hydraulic model experiments in a specific Steel-making Plant in the Country. Taking into full considerations of the phenomena occurring in the water modeling and other factors the optimal technology parameters for the 21t ladle are obtained as below: the position of nozzle approximately (0.5~0.6)r, the flow rate of bottom blowing approximately 500~600 L/min and the submerging depth of submerged tube about 200mm.

    The present paper systematically has summerized the development of steelmaking-continuous casting technology and its principal technological achievements in China since 2000, analyzed its main problems currently existing and predicted the direction of the development of this technology in 2010 in our Country. In order to further raise the the productional and technological level of steelmaking-continuous casting technology in China it’s imperative to develop new concept and establish new target for the iron and steel works of the new generation of the 21st Cerntury and in the meanwhile build up a new platform for production of the hgih efficient and low cost clean steel by means of systematical optimization,dissection and integration of the over-all process of the steelmaking-continuous casting. The main problems of technology existing in building up the platform of production of the clean steel, solutions to those problems and specific measures are also involved in the disccusion of this paper.

    Selection of hot metal pretreatment mode for new steel-making plant

    The optimal order of the hot metal pretreatment achieved by thermodynamic calculation and comparison of different flux and pretreatment methods is hot metal desulphurization-desiliconizaton and dephosphorization. The pretreatment containers determined by comparison of the thermodynamic conditions for different flux and different pretreatment methods are as follows: ladle for desulphurization by KR and converter for desiliconization and dephosphorization exclusively. It’s concluded by comparison analysis of the operation cost for hot metal pretreatment that special converter be selected to carry out dssiliconization and dephosphorization simultaneously and for the purpose of desulphurization KR method (CaO used as the desulphurizer) be adopted. The optimal hot metal pretreatment mode for the newly built steel-making plant is determined to be hot metal desulphurization in ladle by KR method (CaO as desulphurizer) and desiliconization and dephosphorization in converter.

    Simulation study on optimization of flow control device for a single-strand tundish in slab continuous casting

    The fluid flow in the tundish of stainless steel slab casting has been studied by water model experiment and numerical simulation. The results show that severe problem existed in the flow field of the original tundish; and short circuit phenomenon was obviously in existance and the ratio of the dead zone was relatively larger and thus the homogenization of the hot metal was not so acceptable; and by orthogonal optimization tests an optimal scheme of the dam and weir combination is drawn up and the flow field of the tundish is improved; and by application of the optimized plan in which the gas bubbling curtain is used in place of the original weir the flow field of the tundish is further improved. On the basis of the water model experiments and numerical simulation calculation and in combination of the actual conditions of the Steel Plant it’s strongly recommended the technology of the gas bubbling curtain should be be utilized in lieu of the original weir in the single strand continuous casting tundish and the optimal process parameters of the gas bubbling curtain of the tundish for the stainless steel continuous caster in Taigang be chosen as follows: the wall is positioned 1150mm away from the original weir and the bottom gas blow rate controlled within the limit of about 120 L/min.

    Comparison and analysis of steel slag treatment method and comprehensive utilization

Results show that the steel slag comprehensive utilization and residual heat reclamation are still in the phase of research and development and haven’t been applied into industrial production broadly and therefore development of a new type steel slag disposal process for appropriate use of the resource is impending.

    The on-site temperatures of the ring carriages of No.1 and No.2 80t Converters of a specific Company are measured, and then on the basis of the measurements effects of water cooling of the carriage and the gap between the carriage and the furnace stack on the temperature field of the carriage and the stress distribution are studied by modeling the temperature field of the two carriages using the finite element method and by threedimensional thermal and mechanical coupling stress analysis, thus providing necessary reference data for design and use of the ring carriage of the converter.

    Macro-segregation in cast bloom of gear steel and its formation mechanism

    The present paper mainly researched on the carbon macrosegregation and etched macrostructures of cast bloom of gear steel 20CrMnTiH2 produced by Xiangtan Steel with cross section of 300 mm×430 mm in order to find out the relations between the carbon macrosegregation and etched macrostructure and the formation mechanism of carbon macrosegregation. The results show that the segregation degree was positive in columnar zone and columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) boundaries, negative in equiaxed zone and positive again in the center of cast bloom. The carbon segregation distribution morphology turned out to be W style. The carbon content shows a clear relation with the etched macrostructure and it indicates that carbon macrosegregation is related closely with solidification.

    Study and practice on optimization of the flow control device of continuous casting tundish

    The flow field behavior of tundish with multi-hole dam in the No.7 billet caster of KISC is researched by hydraulic simulation experiment. Results show that the flow characteristics of every flow in tundish tend to be similar, the initial response time and average residence time of fluid increase, the volume of dead zone decreases and the metallurgical effect of tundish is improved obviously by setting up the multi-hole dam. The design plan of the No.3 multi-hole dam is assumed to be the preferred one. Since application of the experimental results into production the quality of billet has been improved clearly and the non-metallic inclusions of TS800U billet decreased from 52% to 3.5%.

    The type and cause to the formation of the intermedium cracks of the continuous casting slab are analyzed by macro examination and SEM and measures to eliminate the inter- medium cracks are put forward including compositions of the steel,secondary cooling schedule, pressure of driving rollers, soft reduction and support segments. Results show that the sulfur content of steel and support segments are main factors leading to the intermedium cracks. Since adoption of the improvement measures, the rate of the intermedium crack occurrence has been obviously descended.

    A new algorithm of endpoint carbon content of BOF based on of off-gas analysis

    Various algorithms of controlling the endpoint carbon content of BOF were studied on the basis of off-gas analysis. A new algorithm was suggested by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of exponential decay models provided by Meyer H. W. and Uemura T. The principle of this algorithm is to standardize decarburization oxygen efficiency divided by the maximum decarburization oxygen efficiency of this heat, take advantage of the information of the reference decarburization curve, and carry out the multipoint calibration for the bath carbon content of this heat. The off-line simulation results for low carbon steel show that this algorithm has good suitability and will play an importance role in improving the control accuracy and hitting rate of the endpoint carbon content in BOF steelmaking practice.

    Innocuous treatment and comprehensive utilization of stainless steel slag

    Stainless steel slag is harmful to the environment due to Cr6+, and transformation of Cr3+ to Cr6+ is carrying on continuously when the slag is piling up. Therefore harmless processing and comprehensive utilization should be provided as soon as possible. Innocuous treatment methods include high-temperature reduction (dry method), water-leaching reduction (wet method) and solidification. The comprehensive utilization trend of the stainless steel slag is to resolve the problem of enrichment of harmful sulfur and phosphorus and realize the slag regeneration in order to promote internal recycle of the slag and reduce the external utilization.

    Application of sulfur distribution ratio in optimization of LF ladle slag composition

    The sulphur content of the Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2 series of various constituents in the slag and the sulphur distribution ratio under the equilibrium condition are calculated and the effects of change of various constituents in the slag and variation of the hot metal temperature on the sulphur distribution ratio analyzed using the empirical expression derived by Ohta and Suito and the Young et al.’s model. By calculation of the sulphur content in the LF refining slag and the sulphur distribution ratio in a specific Steel-making Plant of Shougang the calculation model is validated and the compositions of the refining slag optimized in a bid to achieve the best desulphurization effect.
