Experimental Study on Deep Desulphurization of Clean Steel in Refining Process
    Steelmaking    2005, 21 (06): 23-26.
    Abstract2198)            Save
Based on the study of RH refining process the law of effects of high CaO slag series on the hot metal desulphurization is explored. Results show that it's definitely possible to refine the clean steel with(S) <0.005% provided that the constituents of the slag series are appropriate. In the meanwhile other factors such as the basicity of the slag series, slagging index and slag quantity will also have great effects on the endpoint sulphur content in steel.

    Steelmaking    2005, 21 (06): 27-29.
    Abstract2234)            Save
According to the structure and process parameters of the tundish in a specific steel plant the hot metal flowing process and the retention conditions are mathematically simulated. The present paper numerically calculates, compares and analyzes the velocity vector diagram and RTD curve of the hot metal flowing under the different settings of the dams in the tundish using soft ware PHOENICS. Results show that the positions of the weirs and dams as well as space between them are of great significance to the hot metal flowing within the tundish.

Effects of Inert Atmosphere and Reducing Agent on Melting Rate of Low Carbon Mold Flux of Continuous Casting
    Steelmaking    2005, 21 (06): 30-32.
    Abstract2439)            Save
The melting speed of low carbon CC mold flux composed of different carbon materials (graphite and active carbon) and different carbon mass fraction (2.6%~3.2%) is measured in the air and in the argon. Results indicate that the melting speed of the flux under the protection of the inert gas is slightly slower than that in the air. The effects of three different reducing agents (Si-Ca alloy powder, Si-Al-Ca-Ba alloy powder and Al powder) on the melting speed of a similar low carbon CC mold flux (carbon mass fraction 2.6%) are separately studied. Results show that the melting speed of the flux with addition of the reducing agent is far less than that of the flux without addition of any reducing agent, in which Al plays the most important role in retardation of flux melting.

    Abstract2244)            Save
A water model for 130t ladle has been established and the mixing time of the molten steel in the ladle measured by conductivity method. The effects of different arrangement of permeable elements and different gas blowing rate on the mixing time of the molten steel in the process of ladle bottom argon blowing have been discussed. In the meanwhile the flow field inside the ladle is numerically simulated and the changes of the flow field in the ladle in different conditions are investigated and the optimal bottom argon blowing positions and argon bubbling patterns determined.

The mass transfer characteristics of vacuum refining process under the top oxygen blown conditions in a RHMFB unit are simulated by experiment on absorption of CO2 using NaOH diluted solution, and influences of such a few factors as the lifting gas flow rate, top blow gas flow rate, top lance height, diameter of the up and down snorkels, immersion depth of the snorkels and number and distribution of nozzles on the mass transfer investigated by a 1∶5.45 water model of a 120 t RH-MFB unit and the volumetric mass transfer coefficients measured under the various parameter combinations and the relation between the volumetric mass transfer coefficients and partial pressure of CO2 further clarified. Results indicate that the mass transfer coefficients increase with growup of the lifting gas flow rate, top blow gas flow rate, partial pressure of CO2, inner diameter of snorkel and immersion depth of snorkel.

The cleanliness of high carbon steel from EAF-LF-CC billet has been notably improved by means of a series technical measures such as charging DRI, hot metal and pig iron, changing the deoxidation and desulphurization methods for EAF at tapping stage, using appropriate refining slag series and applying Argon gas soft stirring and protection casting practice etc. As the results, the total (O) content attains about 15 ppm, (N) about 45 ppm, (P) about 0.012% and (S) about 0.005%. The average of nonmetallic inclusions (5 μm) approaches to 3.29 entries/mm2 and the ratio of inclusions below 5 μm is 84%. The quantity of large inclusions in billets is less than 5.48 mg/10 kg. 
